A trophy to be given to the winner of the Rugby World Cup 2019, which starts on Sept. 20, was carried up to the summit of Mt. Fuji early on Tuesday to wish for the success of the international sporting event in Japan.
The pre-Cup event was arranged by the organizing committee because the logo of the upcoming World Cup bears an image of Mt. Fuji.
The Webb Ellis Cup is made of sterling silver covered with beaten gold, measures 47.2 centimeters tall and weighs 4.5 kilograms.
Twenty-one people including members and coaches of Yamanashi Gakuin University's rugby club began the ascent Monday, taking turns to carry the cup.
As soon as the sun began appearing between the clouds shortly after 5 a.m., the members -- wearing jerseys representing countries participating in the World Cup -- posed for pictures with the trophy.
