
Rice paddies glisten in the gloaming as the sun sets over the mountains in Fukagawa, Hokkaido. Mid-May marks the arrival of rice-sowing season in the Sorachi region, situated in the heart of Hokkaido's rice belt. The nearly 400 rice farmers in the area tend to their idyllic fields for a fruitful autumn harvest. According to local agricultural cooperatives, this year's yield of local cultivars including Yumepirika and Nanatsuboshi is expected to total about 29,000 tons.
