ZUSHI, Kanagawa -- A slope stretching along a municipal road in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture, collapsed Wednesday, swallowing a female pedestrian below, police and firefighters said.
According to the Zushi Police Station and the Zushi Fire Department, the police received a call at about 8 a.m. from a resident reporting that a landslide seemed to have occurred and people may have been buried. The woman was rescued and taken to a hospital, but was confirmed dead.
The woman is believed to be 18 years old, according to police.
A dashboard camera installed in a car parked near the site showed video footage of several people being swallowed up as a 7-meter-high stretch of soil slid down the hill. The police are carrying out a search and rescue operation using heavy machinery.
A condominium stands at the top of the collapsed slope. According to the Zushi municipal government, the site's vicinity is designated as a hazard area prone to disasters involving sediment movement.
