Sky Italia video images of destroyed houses and people picking their way through rubble in a picturesque mountain villages give some idea of the devastation wrought by the powerful earthquake that struck central Italy this morning, leaving at least 27 dead.

Corriere Della Sera has video of injured victims being taken to hospital.

You can get Twitter updates on L'Aquila – the name of the historic capital of the mountainous Abruzzo region – where @giannicatalfamo has posted that mobile phones are only partially working, with SMS more reliable.

Now Public, an aggregator website, is useful in collating video images and Twitter updates in one place.

The Guardian has a photo gallery of the earthquake, with a particularly dramatic picture of a car teetering on the edge of a giant hole that has opened up in the road.
