Weather warnings for the Lothians as heavy rain set to batter Edinburgh this week

Lothian residents have been warned to expect heavy rain in the coming days as a flood warning is issued over the majority of the central belt.

The Met Office has told travelers there may be large disruptions as the weather front hits the area on Sunday night (October 18).

According to the forecaster, the rain will become heavy late on Sunday evening, after which it will gradually get heavier before bearing its worst at around 3am on Monday morning.

Those heading out in the rain have been advised that flooding may have occurred overnight in certain areas.

Driving conditions will also be poor, with water spraying up off of the road as well as heavy cloud.

Forecasts predict that the north and west of Edinburgh will see the worst of the torrential rain, with East Lothian to see slightly calmer conditions.

The rain is set to continue throughout Monday, with a brief dry spell in the early afternoon. Tuesday will also see heavy downpour in the early hours, before changing to lighter showers later in the day.

A statement from the Met Office said: “Spells of rain, heavy at times, commencing Sunday night will persist through most of Monday before clearing on Tuesday morning.

“Typically 50-75 mm rain is expected over hills and mountains. Over a few mountains, most likely in Argyll, as much as 75-100 mm rain may fall.”
