The MET Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Irvine and Kilwinning this afternoon.
Forecasters predict the storm will hit the whole of Ayrshire at 7pm.
It is understood the heavy showers and thunderstorms will bring difficult travelling conditions and localised flooding.
The summer storm is likely to affect diving conditions and delays to train services are possible.
The MET Office said some short term loss of power and other services is likely and there is a probability of damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes.
At the time of writing the weather warning has been issued for five days.
