Met Office weather warning for North East with winds of up to 60mph expected

The Met Office has issued a weather warning and says winds of 60mph could hit the region.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice was already in place for the North East on Thursday.

The second yellow warning says that high winds could cause some travel disruption and possible power cuts.

It is in place from 11am to 8pm and affects including Newcastle , Gateshead and Northumberland.

It also covers Sunderland , County Durham , South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Winds across northern England are expected to strengthen later this morning with gusts reaching 60 mph before gradually easing from the west during the evening.

"The most exposed routes over the Pennines may see gusts in excess of 65 mph for a time."

What to expect

  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges likely
  • Probably some bus and train services affected, with some journeys taking longer
  • Some short term loss of power and other services is possible
