Weather warning issued for the North East as winds up to 70mph to hit ahead of Storm Ciara

Gale force winds will hit parts of the North East ahead of a full day of stormy weather on Sunday.

Gusts of up to 70mph are expected in parts of Northumberland and County Durham on Saturday as the country braces itself for Storm Ciara.

A yellow weather warning is in place from 12pm, affecting north Northumberland and western parts of County Durham.

An area of strong winds will move eastwards across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England and north Wales on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Heavy rain, surface water and spray will exacerbate poor conditions with some delays on public transport expected.

Gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected inland with exposed coasts and hills seeing gusts of around 70mph for a time.

The winds will ease from the west during the night but are expected to pick up again on Sunday morning.

The entire UK is under a wind warning all day on Sunday in anticipation of Storm Ciara.

Over the weekend, wind gusts will widely reach 50-60mph across many areas, with gusts of 80mph or higher at the coast and exposed locations.
