Weather warning issued for North East as Met Office warns of possible flooding and travel disruption

The North East has been hit with yet another Met Office weather warning.

A warning for strong winds is currently in place and now a warning for rain has been issued.

The Met Office say the warning will be in place until 8pm on Tuesday and that there could be flooding and travel disruption.

The warning covers areas in the region including the Barnard Castle area of County Durham and Allendale in Northumberland .

A spokesperson said: "Rain, some heavy, will continue through much of Tuesday, particularly persistent across high ground.

"Many places are likely to see 20-30 mm of rain, while some parts of the Lake District and north Pennines could see 50-100 mm which may lead to some travel disruption and flooding.

"Gales will accompany the rain, for which a separate warning is in force for much of the day."

What to expect

  • Spray and flooding probably making journey times longer - by car, bus and perhaps also by train
  • Some interruption to power supplies and other services is possible
  • Flooding may affect a few homes and businesses
