Weather warning increased to amber for 'very strong winds' in parts of Nottinghamshire

A weather warning for wind has been escalated to amber in parts of Nottinghamshire this afternoon.

It comes as Storm Francis, the sixth named storm for the UK this year, has been making its way across the country from overnight on Monday (August 24).

Heavy rain has already hit Nottinghamshire and has continued throughout Tuesday morning (August 25) but harsher weather conditions are building for the afternoon.

A yellow weather warning was already in place by the Met Office, which runs until 9am on Wednesday.

However, in parts of the country, including Nottinghamshire, this has been escalated to an amber warning, with "very strong winds" predicted.

The warning is in place from 2pm until 10pm.

The Met Office website states amber warning means: "Very strong winds are likely to bring disruption to parts of England and Wales Tuesday during afternoon and evening."

It now means transport service cancellations, road and bridge closures and overall long journey times are now "likely".

"There is a good chance that power cuts may occur, with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage," forecasters say.

"Flying debris is likely and could lead to injuries or danger to life and probably some damage to buildings and trees, such as tiles blown from roofs and branches on roads."
