Weather warning for 'very strong winds' upgraded as Met Office warns of 'danger to life'

A weather warning for "very strong winds" has been upgraded as the country prepares for the first major storm of 2020.

An amber warning for wind now covers much of England, including Bristol and the rest of the south west.

The alert will be in place tomorrow (February 9) from 8am in the morning to 9pm in the evening, with the Met Office warning people who are travelling to expect disruption to travel during this time.

The warning says there will be a risk of flying debris, longer journey times and power cuts.

Forecasters have said: "Flying debris could lead to injuries or danger to life.

"Some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs expected.

"Longer journey times and cancellations, as road, rail, air and ferry services affected.

"Power cuts with the potential to affect other services, such as mobile phone coverage.

"Injuries and danger to life from large waves and beach material being thrown onto sea fronts, coastal roads and properties."

The forecast for the south west for tonight says: "A dry and cloudy start to the evening with the odd clear spell.

"Overnight will see rain, heavy at times, across the region, accompanied by gales. Minimum temperature 8C.

"On Sunday, the rain will continue through the morning, still remaining heavy at times.

"It will begin to clear during the afternoon, but still remaining cloudy and windy, with gales.

"Maximum temperature 13C."
