Weather warning for snow on Boxing Day as Scots set for festive whiteout

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow across parts of Scotland on Boxing Day.

Power cuts, travel disruption and icy conditions are on the cards as two bands on wintry weather weep the country on December 26.

The south of the country in particular is likely to see treacherous conditions.

Scots in the Borders, in Dumfries and Lockerbie and towards Kelso in the east can expect a whiteout.

East Ayrshire and the Larkhall area of South Lanakrshire are also likely to be affected as will Stirlingshire and Perth.

However, Clydeside authorities including Glasgow, Edinburgh, South and North Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Argyll and Bute will avoid snowfall on Boxing Day.

We told how the weather on Christmas Day in Scotland is set to be cold and breezy with lots of sunshine.

The morning of Christmas Eve started off on a frosty note today with a risk of ice.

Any wet and wintry weather will fade this afternoon as sunshine with easterly winds adding to the chill, said BBC Scotland Weather presenter Gillian Smart.

Temperatures today will reach 6C in Edinburgh and Glasgow and stay above freezing in Aberdeen and Inverness at 5C.

So far the Met Office have only issued warnings for Boxing Day.

A statement from the Met Office read: "Snow and strong winds will probably affect some higher elevations, leading to possible disruption, mainly to travel.

"Some roads and railways likely to be affected by snow or ice, leading to longer journey times by car, as well as by bus and possibly train services

"Some short term loss of power and other services is possible."
