Weather warning for rain in the North East this weekend - here's what the Met Office is saying

Drivers are being urged to take care on the roads as heavy rain is expected to hit the North East this weekend.

A yellow weather warning for rain is in place across the region until 3pm on Sunday.

The Met Office says that even though there is a warning in place, it will not rain constantly throughout the weekend.

There are expected to be some heavy showers which could result in difficulty driving conditions.

Meteorologist Becky Mitchell said: "The bulk of the rain is likely to be on Saturday morning, with some heavy bursts.

"There is likely to be a lot of spray on the roads. For anyone travelling for their summer holidays, on staycations for example, there could be tricky driving conditions.

"The rain is potentially going to ease through Saturday afternoon. It will however stay largely cloudy and there will be patchy drizzle. The temperature will get up to around 17C."

Sunday is expected to start reasonably dry, with possible sunny spells.

"It looks like it's going to cloud over on Sunday afternoon and there could be a few showers," said Ms Mitchell. "However, it is going to be a drier day compared to Saturday.

"The weather warning is until 3pm so there will be a risk of potentially some heavy rain. The temperature will go up to around 18C on Sunday."

Monday is expected to be largely dry, though the weather will remain unsettled, with possible showers as well as sunshine.
