Weather: UK will be hotter than Barcelona as sweltering 37C heatwave arrives

Parts of the UK will be hotter than Barcelona this week as the mercury is expected to climb to a sweltering 37C.

Experts say we could see highs of 37C in the south-east on Thursday, which would be the hottest ever for July.

The current record for the month is 36.7C, which was set at Heathrow in 2015, according to the Mirror.

On Thursday, temperatures in Barcelona should only reach 32C - 5C cooler than in the UK.

And it looks like we could be in for some uncomfortable evenings as the mercury isn't expected to dip below 25C overnight.

On Tuesday,  the hottest place in the UK will once again be in the south-east where forecasters are predicting temperatures to soar to 34C.

Meanwhile in Bristol, the mercury should hover around 32C today - which will be the hottest day of the week for our city.

Met Office chief meteorologist Paul Gundersen said: "Tuesday will see more widespread sunshine across all parts of the UK, with the best of the brightness in the east and some scattered cloud remaining along western coasts.

"It will be predominantly dry across the UK with temperatures climbing into the low 30s Celsius across east Wales and much of England as far north as York.

"Parts of southeast England may reach 34°C.

"Later in the afternoon, thunderstorms will move into the West Country, bringing heavy thundery showers from the early evening and overnight as they spread north into Wales before dissipating in the early hours of Wednesday."

Forecasters are predicting we may experience record-breaking overnight temperatures as we move into Wednesday.

It could reach 25C overnight, which would beat the previous record of 23.9C set in August 1990.

The spokesman added: "From Wednesday, fresher air is expected to move into western parts of the UK. However, the heat will continue to build in central and eastern parts with highs reaching 35C.

"Thursday is expected to see the peak in temperatures with 37C possible in the south east of England."

In North Wales, the warmest conditions are set to arrive on Tuesday with temperatures widely hitting 30C

It will be slightly less warm on Wednesday and Thursday in this area, but temperatures will still be in the high 20s.

Temperatures are expected to drop on Friday when the weather will become a lot cooler.
