Weather tomorrow, July 10: IMD issues heavy rain alert for Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and more as monsoon covers entire India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued widespread rainfall across several parts of the country on Friday, July 10, as the southwest monsoon remains active after covering the entire country.

According to the IMD, an interaction between the ongoing well-marked low-pressure area and mid-latitude westerlies is expected to enhance rainfall over parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand until July 10. Heavy rain is also likely over several regions in northwest, central, eastern and peninsular India, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

Southwest monsoon covers entire India

The IMD said the southwest monsoon covered the entire country on July 9, one day later than its normal date of July 8.

The monsoon further advanced into the remaining parts of the north Arabian Sea, Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab, completing its seasonal progression across India.

IMD weather forecast for July 10

The weather department expects light to moderate rainfall at fairly widespread to widespread places over:

  • East India
  • Northeast India
  • Northwest plains
  • Peninsular India
  • West Coast
  • Western Himalayan region

Several places are also likely to witness isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, Central India is expected to receive fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy showers, while West India may experience scattered rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy spells.

Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand likely to receive heavy rain

According to the IMD, the interaction between a well-marked low-pressure area and mid-latitude westerlies will continue until July 10, resulting in enhanced rainfall activity over Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially in areas vulnerable to waterlogging and landslides.

Fresh weather systems expected to keep rain active

The IMD said several weather systems are expected to influence rainfall over the coming days, including:

A fresh cyclonic circulation likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coasts towards the end of the week.

  • Another cyclonic circulation over Bihar and neighbouring areas during the second half of the week.
  • A persistent offshore trough extending from south Gujarat to Karnataka.
  • Strong westerly winds across southern peninsular and central India.
  • Continued influence of the low-level Somali Jet, which supports monsoon activity.

These systems are expected to sustain rainfall across large parts of the country.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in several states

Apart from rainfall, the IMD has forecast:

  • Thunderstorms with lightning
  • Gusty winds
  • Isolated thundersqualls

These conditions are likely over parts of:

  • Central India
  • East India
  • Northeast India
  • Northwest plains
  • Peninsular India
  • West Coast
  • Western Himalayan region

People are advised to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and follow local weather advisories.

Rainfall likely to remain below normal overall

Despite active rainfall across many regions, the IMD said overall rainfall activity across the country is likely to remain below normal during the week.

Rainfall is expected to remain below normal over:

  • Indo-Gangetic Plains
  • South India
  • Northeastern states

However, localised heavy to very heavy rainfall may still occur due to favourable weather systems.

What happened this week?

During the past week, India witnessed widespread monsoon activity triggered by the season's first depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which later weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over central India.

The system brought extremely heavy rainfall to parts of Odisha and widespread heavy rain across Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala and several northeastern states.

With the monsoon now covering the entire country and multiple weather systems remaining active, the IMD expects wet conditions to continue across many regions on July 10, particularly over northern, eastern and western coastal states.
