Weather today: 'Intense downpours' to lash Leinster and Munster as Met Eireann issue warning

Two provinces are under alert today as more rain, thunder and floods are set to batter many areas.

Met Eireann have issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for Munster and Leinster as they warned of "intense and potentially thundery downpours" with a risk of flooding.

The warning came into effect at 6am this morning and will remain in place until 6am tomorrow.

It replaces an earlier warning that covered Munster, Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow and Offaly.

A spokesman said: “Intense and potentially thundery downpours during Thursday and Thursday night may lead to localised flooding.

“Given recent heavy rainfall, this will further elevate river levels and may result in river flooding also.”

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Bright or sunny intervals will occur too though, with the best of these likely over the southern half of the country.

"Top temperatures of 14C to 19C, warmest in the south. Light to moderate easterly or variable breezes."

“Friday will be a cool, breezy day with sunshine and showers, these heaviest and most frequent in the east.

"It will become mainly dry later in the day, with showers becoming confined to east and north facing coastal areas. Highest temperatures of 14C to 17C with fresh, gusty northerly winds, which will gradually ease later."

The outlook does improve for the weekend with warm, dry and even sunny spells for most parts of the country on Saturday and Sunday.

“Saturday will be largely dry with sunny spells.

“There may be a few showers near north and west coasts. Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C with moderate northerly breezes.

“Sunday will be largely dry with sunny spells and light variable breezes.”

“Monday will start off dry. However, rain will develop in the west during the day and will spread to all areas.

“Highest temperatures of 14C to 16C with moderate southeast winds.”
