Snow is headed for the North East as the Spring cold snap blanketing the region is set to continue. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice and snow that will last into Friday (March 10).
Temperatures overnight dropped below freezing, with records showing Newcastle dropped as low as -6C. The Met Office has forecast that temperatures will struggle to climb above 3C over the coming days.
Though conditions have stayed relatively calm in the region, with much of the snow falling further south, it looks like it’ll be our turn as the week comes to a close. Weather maps also show snow fall could hit the North East on Sunday afternoon.

The Met Office's chief meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said that the weather in the next few days could cut off rural communities in the north.
Mr Lehnert said: "Snow, ice and low temperatures are the main themes of this week’s forecast, with the UK under an Arctic maritime air mass. Snow could lead to some travel disruption, with a chance some rural communities in the north could be cut off.
"Further snow and hail showers are also expected along northern coasts, especially in northern Scotland. The impact of lying snow and ice on untreated surfaces may have an impact on Thursday morning travel."
Weather maps show that the snow hitting much of the rest of the country will head our way. WX Charts predicts that we could expect between one and two centimetres of snow an hour starting tomorrow (March 9).
Those in rural areas, along the coast and on higher ground can expect the most disruption, with roads and transport networks disrupted by the weather. These conditions are expected to carry through to the weekend with more snow, ice and frost.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a level three cold weather alert for the whole of England. Dr Agostinho Sousa, head of extreme events and health protection at the UK Health Security Agency, said: “During periods like this, it is important to check in on family, friends and relatives who may be more vulnerable to the cold weather, as it can have a serious impact on health.
“If you have a pre-existing medical condition or are over the age of 65, it is important to try and heat your home to at least 18C if you can.’’
