Weather in Dublin today: Temperatures to plummet below zero tonight on mixed day for the capital

Temperatures are set to plummet below freezing tonight after a mixed day of weather in the city with sunny spells interrupted by scattered showers.

Met Eireann say the showers will become isolated during the day before being mainly dry this evening with top temperatures of just 9 or 10C.

As the night draws in the mercury will drop dramatically to between 1 and -1C and it will remain very cold and frosty on Monday morning.

Monday will be dry at first with bright spells before becoming cloudy during the afternoon with patchy rain and drizzle and top temperatures of 10 or 11C.

St Patrick's Day looks like it will be a bit warmer but temperatures are set to fall again as the week goes on.

The national forecast reads: "Tuesday, St. Patrick's Day: Current indications are for a very mild and mostly cloudy day, with widespread rain in Connacht and in the western half of Ulster, heavy at times locally.

"Good dry spells elsewhere, with patchy rain and drizzle, but rain and drizzle will be persistent in western coastal areas of Munster.

"Highs of 10 to 14 or 15 degrees, in moderate to fresh south to southwest winds.

"Tuesday night: Rain will extend southeastwards to all parts. Clearer, mainly dry conditions will follow from the northwest early on Wednesday morning, but it will turn colder.

"Lowest temperatures 3 to 6 degrees, coldest in Ulster and Connacht. Winds veering west to northwest and decreasing light to moderate with the clearance."

Wednesday will see a cloudy and wet start in the east and south before rain gradually clears with highs of 7 to 12C.

But it could get very cold again on Wednesday night with temperatures of -2 to 3C north to south.
