Weather in Dublin today: City set to shiver in subzero weekend temperatures with a chance of snow next week

It's looking like a grim weekend in store for the capital with persistent rain and freezing temperatures expected on Saturday and there's even a chance of some snow next week.

The showers will spread from the west this morning and while there will be some sunny spells, the highest temperatures we can expect is just 9C.

But it will get even colder as the night draws in and the showers die down.

Under a clear sky, there's a strong chance of fog and frost as temperatures drop to a chilly -1C to 3C.

The fog may linger on Sunday morning but otherwise it will be a largely dry and bright day with some sunshine and highest temperatures of 8 to 10C.

And Met Eireann say we can expect the changeable weather to last into next week with rain expected most days.

The national forecast reads: "On Monday morning the last of the rain will soon clear the east coast to leave a bright and breezy day with sunshine and showers.

"Showers will be heaviest and most frequent in the north and west, possibly becoming wintry over high ground here.

"Fresh to strong and gusty west to northwest winds with maximum temperatures ranging 6 to 10°C.

"Showers will continue in the north and west on Monday night, elsewhere it will become dry and clear. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 4°C.

"On Tuesday the showers will be mostly in the north with good dry and sunny periods for the rest of the country. Maximum temperatures 7 to 10°C in fresh to strong westerly winds."

It's expected to stay very cold on Wednesday with rain turning to sleet or snow on higher ground.
