Ireland weather: Country to be battered by thunderstorms this week despite scorching heat

Ireland will be battered by heavy thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday, despite temperatures soaring to 25C for most of the week.

Tuesday and Wednesday look set to be fairly hot and dry with the occasional shower, before things take a turn for the worse tomorrow night.

Meanwhile, early indications show that the weekend will be mostly sunny.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "It will brighten up this morning with a mainly dry day to follow and more sunny spells developing as the day goes on.

"A few scattered sharp showers are possible in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures a warm 19C to 25C with very light winds and afternoon sea breezes developing.

"Tonight will be a dry night with good clear spells at first, and mist and fog patches developing by dawn. Lowest temperatures of 10C to 15C in light variable breezes.

"Tomorrow will be dry and mostly dull to start but brightening up during the day with sunny spells and some isolated showers possible.

"Warm again, with highest temperatures of 19C to 25C in light northerly or variable breezes.

"Wednesday night will be generally dry and mild with some mist patches and lowest temperatures of 10C to 15C. Later in the night, some heavy or thundery showers will develop in the southeast.

The forecaster added: "Thursday will begin dry and bright in many areas with some sunny spells.

"Showers or longer spells of rain will slowly spread from the southeast during the day with the risk of thundery downpours.

"The north and northwest though should stay mostly dry. Highest temperatures will range 17C to 22C in light to moderate north to northeasterly breezes.

"Thursday night will be very mild and humid with spells of showery rain likely in many areas and the risk of thunder.

"Friday will be generally cloudy and showery in southern and midland parts.

"There is still a potential for some thundery bursts in places, but northern parts of the country may stay drier with sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 19C to 23C."
