Weather forecast for Ashes test: Rain threatens Old Trafford match

Tomorrow is the start of the fourth test match in this year's Ashes series between Austrailia and England.

England's hopes have been restored after Ben Stokes' stunning performance saw them reverse their fortunes and win the latest match meaning the series is 1-1 with two tests to go.

The countries will clash again tomorrow at Old Trafford but it is unclear whether we will see much cricket at all with the latest weather forecasts not looking hopeful.

According to the BBC it looks set to pour down this evening before the test from around 8 to 9pm though to the morning.

While forecasters predict a small chance of rain, about 20 per cent, all day tomorrow and even expecting a bit of sunshine to break through the clouds, it remains touch and go whether the teams will play for the full day.

Forecasters paint a similar picture on Thursday with a 15 per cent chance of showers and on a largely over cast day, particularly by the mid afternoon.

However Friday looks the most likely to see a washout with high chance of rain throughout the day and dark clouds dominating Manchester throughout.

Saturday improves with some sun expected and a small chance (about 12 per cent) of rain forecast.

Throughout the week temperatures are expected to hover around 17 degrees.

What the Met Office says

Tonight:

A spell of more persistent rain will affect all parts this evening, accompanied by brisk winds. Drier conditions with clear spells and easing winds will follow later in the night. Minimum temperature 8 °C.

Will we see any sunshine in the week ahead?

Wednesday:

Sunny spells and scattered showers at first, but rain and strong winds arrive by midday, with gales developing along exposed coasts. The rain clears to heavy showers in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Changeable and often windy on Thursday and Friday with spells of rain interspersed by periods of sunshine and showers. Lighter winds on Saturday and only isolated showers. Some chilly nights.
