Weather forecast as chilling winds bring 3C temperatures to Greater Manchester

People across Greater Manchester will be wrapping up in extra layers or turning up the heating today, as chilling winds bring temperatures in the low single digits.

While some parts of Scotland will see snow and sleet today, north-west England will avoid a deep freeze, though the mercury won’t be reaching anything higher than seven degrees celsius.

The day started with a wet spell but showers have since cleared southwards, with sunny spells to come this afternoon.

Met Office forecaster Claire Nasir said: "Things turn a lot colder, Wednesday into Thursday.

"There will be significant wind chill particularly in the morning.

“Through Thursday morning there will be a few showers to start off the day, with a nagging persistent wind across eastern counties of England.

“Elsewhere there’ll be a quieter end to the day, we’ll see some sunshine, the winds lose their strength.”

Winds are expected to get stronger overnight tonight, with minimum temperatures expected to reach just three degrees.

Low cloud and rain is expected to move in too, with fog forming over higher ground.

Claire Nasir added: “Temperatures though will struggle, if you’re stepping outside, wrap up warm as there’ll be significant wind chill.”

The chilly weather comes after a washout for many across the county, as heavy downpours fell across the North West yesterday (Wednesday).

One silver lining for now is that the cold snap isn't expected to last long.

The mercury is set to shoot up to double digits by Saturday, much of the country seeing milder temperatures of around 11C or 12C.

“Into the weekend, things turn milder, we’ll see some stronger winds with rain and showers,” forecaster Claire Nasir explained.

Temperatures in Greater Manchester are expected to get as high as 11°C on Friday and Saturday, though there’s a high likelihood of rain.

Sunday is expected to have more settled weather though, staying mostly dry with highs of nine.
