Weather expert pinpoints when heavy rain most likely to land as 'unsettled week' forecast

The wait looks set to continue for the return of summer conditions in Ireland as an unsettled week is forecast.

While most of June saw the country bask in glorious sunshine and sweltering conditions, temperatures have dropped in recent days and rainfall has increased.

That trend looks set to go on over the coming week, with Met Eireann forecasting plenty of showers, some heavy rain and lower temperatures than were experienced in May and June.

Weather expert Alan O'Reilly, who runs the popular @CarlowWeather Twitter account, explained that the heaviest rain will likely fall on Thursday night into Friday morning, while the west will be wettest.

"An unsettled week ahead with temperatures below normal. Mainly showers up to Thursday evening with highest rainfall amounts in the West and lowest in the Southeast," Mr O'Reilly tweeted.

"A risk of heavy rain and strong winds moving across the country Thursday night and Friday."

Below is Met Eireann's forecast for the week ahead:

Monday

Scattered showers are forecast for Monday, with plenty of cloud but some sunny spells developing throughout the morning. Rainfall will become more prolonged in the southwest into the afternoon and evening, with temperatures not rising above 18C in fresh westerly winds.

Tuesday

A similar day is in store on Tuesday, with showers and sunny spells forecast and highs of 15C to 19C expected before a largely dry night.

Wednesday

An almost identical day anticipated on Wednesday, with showers and spells of sunshine and highest temperatures of between 14C and 18C.

Thursday

Thursday will be cloudier, with well-scattered light showers but the possibility of more persistent rainfall in the west and southwest as the day goes on, with highs of 16C to 20C.

Friday

Friday will continue to be unsettled and breezy at stages, with the weekend likely to see outbreaks of rain that will potentially turn heavy at times.
