Weather event that caused Ireland's Beast from the East in 2018 forecast to happen in coming days

The weather event that was responsible for Ireland's Beast from the East in 2018 is predicted to happen again in the next few days.

Weather experts are forecasting a Sudden Stratospheric Warming in the coming week - this is an event takes place 10-50km up in the stratosphere.

More often than not (66% of the time), this increases the risk of colder than normal weather 10-14 days later.

The occurrence increases the chance of cold weather, it's by no means a guarantee. How cold it gets and for how long are dependent on the position of high pressure close to or over Ireland.

Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather said last week: "A Sudden Stratospheric Warming event looks more likely now. As usual what impact this will have on our weather remains to be seen."

But the forecaster added on Saturday: "It is worth noting that most SSW events did NOT result in a cold spell for us and some of coldest winter events happened with NO SSW."

It did however have a direct effect on Ireland's Big Freeze in 2010 and the Beast from the Beast back in 2018 - which you may recall saw Ireland given a Met Eireann red warning.

However, at the moment it will likely be at least 10 days or even closer to the end of the month before any consequences of the weather event are felt in Ireland.

Regardless of the potential for a freezing spell later in the month, chilly conditions are already forecast for the next few days.

Met Eireann are forecasting temperatures to dip as low as -3C on Sunday night with sleet and even snow in eastern counties.

Leinster and Munster can expect some snow on Monday as well with temperatures not likely to rise over 4C during the daytime.
