A local radio weather report provided by Williamtown RAAF Base personnel will be transferred to the Bureau of Meteorology's Sydney office from this month.
The radio cross, which is currently provided by Defence meteorologists from the RAAF Base, will be undertaken by specialist community decision support meteorologists in Sydney from October 26.
The Bureau of Meteorology said this will enable the Defence meteorologists "to focus on supporting the safety and effectiveness of defence personnel and defence operations".
"These arrangements will bring Newcastle into line with those in place for the rest of Australia, where radio crosses are delivered by specialist meteorologist located in capital city offices," a BOM spokesperson said.
"It will result in improved services for the whole community, as well as the Australian Defence Force."
A similar radio weather report provided by meteorologists from East Sale RAAF Base in Gippsland, Victoria will also be transferred onto the BOM.
