Weapons director Zach Cregger is working on new dark comedy

Zach Cregger is working on a dark comedy

Weapons duo Zach Cregger and Roy Lee are reuniting for a new dark comedy.

The 45-year-old filmmaker behind the hit 2025 supernatural horror is teaming up with producer Lee - who is also worked with on 2022's Barbarian and his upcoming Residency Evil movie - on upcoming film Little One from director friend Alex Kavutskiy.

According to Deadline, the project - which is based on a script by Kavutskiy - will focus on a child whose behaviour suddenly changes and threatens to tear apart his picture perfect family.

Despite making his name in the horror world, the project will see Cregger get back to his -roots, having been a founding member and writer for comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U’ Know.

It's noted that casting is underway and production is set to start in Los Angeles in June.

Meanwhile, Cregger is bringing Godzilla vs. Kong writer Zach Shields on board for his planned Weapons prequel, which will explore the backstory of the sinister Aunt Gladys.

As reported by Deadline, Shields and Cregger will co-write the screenplay for the prequel for New Line and Warner Bros under the working title Gladys.

Amy Madigan, 75, played the antagonist in last year's hit film, and her performance won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role last month.

Weapons – which stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich and Benedict Wong – follows a group of strangers whose lives violently intersect after a class of children mysteriously vanish at 2:17am exactly.

Madigan's performance as Aunt Gladys was a huge hit with fans, which convinced director Cregger to develop an origin film for the mysterious villain.

Speaking with The Wrap about whether the Aunt Gladys prequel might lessen the mystique of the character, he said: “It’s crossed my mind.

"But I think that the Gladys story is such an interesting story that I think it’s going to feel very separate and stand on its own two feet, and I don’t think it’s going to diminish Weapons.”
