Weaning Japan off its plastic addiction, an uphill battle

As Japan hosts the G20 summit in Osaka, single-use plastics are high on the agenda. But the country has yet to solve its own plastic problem. Japan generates nine million tons of plastic waste a year, with the average person using 300 plastic bags over the same period. That compares to just 80 bags in France. Although Japanese citizens are required to comply with relatively strict recycling policies, these have had little impact so far on reducing plastic waste. Our Japan correspondents report.
