'We won't be intimidated' - Leith residents will keep EU flag flying despite threatening graffiti

Residents at a block of flats in Leith say they are determined to keep an EU flag flying outside their building, despite threatening graffiti being sprayed on their door.

Spray paint reading "F*** the EU" and "Is EU windows fireproof" was seen on the front door of the building on Cables Wynd, shortly after an EU flag was flown from a first-floor window.

The word "repatriation" was also sprayed on the building in a series of graffiti incidents on Friday and Saturday.

Anne Balfour, who has lived at the building for more than 13 years, said neighbours were keen to keep the flag flying despite the threatening nature of the graffiti.

She told Edinburgh Live: "At first I thought it was just random vandalism. Then the following morning I noticed there there was more graffiti left and I realised it must have been to do with the flag.

Anne said police advised them not to take the flag down. After discussing it Anne's neighbours said they would keep the flag flying, with the support of others who live in the building."

She said: "They wanted to make sure everyone was OK with keeping it up.

"We are all of a mind that we don't want it to come down. We won't give in to this intimidation."

Anne added: "It was quite targeted and nasty. It is a threat and it does make you question how far they will take it."

The graffiti has since been removed and police are investigating. Police Scotland say their inquries are ongoing.
