'We Will Rock You' star Ian McIntosh excited to bring show to Bord Gais Energy Theatre

We Will Rock You star Ian McIntosh is excited about bringing the famous musical to Dublin later this month for a one week run.

The show, which tells the story of a globalised future without musical instruments, will open on October 28 and run for just one week.

Olivier award nominee McIntosh plays the main character of Galileo, who cannot come to terms with the bleak conformist reality of this universe, dreamt up by Ben Elton and Queen.

And speaking with Dublin Live, he said: "I'm really looking forward to bring this production to Dublin.

"All the audiences we have performed to so far have been great, the reactions have been just insane and I'm sure it will be the same if not more in Ireland.

"My character is born into a world where there is no soul, life is computer-generated and he's sort of haunted by the lyrics of the past.

"He feels he's different because he dreamed of being a rock 'n' roll star but they don't really exist in his world."

McIntosh, who has played a number of high-profile roles on the West End and beyond, cited his time in a production of Irish favourite 'The Commitments' as being one of his best to draw on while taking on this new challenge

"I suppose if I could compare it to any other roles the closest would be Deco in the Commitments," he explained.

"Deco was born into music and he found his tribe in the Commitments and Galileo is looking to find his so there are definitely similarities."

The latest tour of We Will Rock You comes at a time of incredible popularity for Queen with their renowned 2018 biopic Bohemian Rhapsody winning four Academy Awards and earning nearly $1 billion at the global box office.

The musical received a new reworking through Music Director Stuart Morley, who according to a press release was asked personally by Queen guitarist Brian May to oversee the updated version.

And McIntosh revealed that he discussed the impact of the hit film on the show with May, saying: "He told me that it has injected a new life into the show and into Queen."

The production features a long list of Queen’s biggest hits, including “We Are the Champions,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “I Want to Break Free,” “Somebody to Love,” “Killer Queen,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Under Pressure,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites the Dust” and the beloved title track.
