'We want to combine our surnames for our baby - I'm worried we'll sound like hippies'

An expectant mother wants to combine her surname with her husband's when naming their baby, but fears people will think they're "hippies".

The parents-to-be are from China and Korea, and love the idea of both sides of the family being "expressed" through a hyphenated surname, especially given that, in China, married women will traditionally keep their surnames.

She does fear however that the "celestial" combination of the two surnames could prove to be a little "on the nose", and doesn't want her child to experience any bullying because of it.

The wife's surname is Sun, and her husband's surname is Moon. While these are both popular surnames in their respective home countries, she fears others won't understand the connection to the child's Asian heritage.

Reaching out to fellow users on Reddit for advice, the conflicted mother wrote: "Would it be too on-the-nose to have a last name that is two celestial figures? I'm scared of bullying or my baby not being taken seriously due to a more cartoony name.

"Or that others might think that their parents are hippies who just made up the name instead of it being connected to our Asian heritage."

A number of people reassured her that 'Sun-Moon' was a beautiful surname combination, and urged her to use it, especially given that it held such a personal significance for her.

One person advised: "Sun-Moon is an awesome surname that represents you and your husband beautifully. Just don't name the baby Celeste or anything like that."

Another commented: "I wouldn't name the baby Star or anything like that, but I think it'd be okay since they're your real last names. If you were making up a new last name I might find it a bit much, but….. honestly, I think it's so cute that a Sun and a Moon fell in love and made a baby. Like that's the sweetest thing ever! I love it."
