We visited the Old Police Station on Lark Lane and this is what we found

Lark Lane is a popular destination in the city for its wide selection of independent bars, restaurants and shops .

There's a range of events that frequently occur on the quirky street, which sees locals and tourists regularly flock to the area.

With its bohemian vibe and strong sense of community, it's an attractive alternative to the busy city centre.

The Old Police Station is now the community centre and a hub of activity on the lane, located just a two-minute walk from historic Sefton Park .

It plays host to ghost tours, market stalls and monthly craft fairs.

We visited the centre to take a peek inside and see just what it offers to the residents - and the city as a whole.

A Prison Cell

As an old police station, it may come as no surprise that one of the cells is still standing and is free for inquisitive people to have a wander round.

What may be unexpected is the size of it - the old fashioned room is surprisingly spacious and offers great insight into the area's past.

It features a selection of old weapons and police equipment, including helmets and batons, plus plenty of information on one of the most notorious crime stories in Liverpool's history.

The story of Florence Maybrick is well known - the young American married Liverpool cotton-broker James Maybrick and was convicted of murdering him by arsenic poisoning in 1889.

She was sentenced to death, which was later reduced to life imprisonment, though many people believed she was innocent.

During the inquest, Florence was held at the Old Police Station, securing the venue in history.

Shops

The community centre has a wide range of shops where people can buy anything from furniture, to plants, to pottery and pictures from the popular shop, Phil's Picture Place.

Owned and operated by Phil Jeffers, 63, every inch of the shop is lined with pictures and frames.

Phil told the ECHO : "I get people from all over the world in here.

"I buy my pictures from all over the world too - there's a wall dedicated to Japan, I've got pieces from Paris and all over.

"I specialise in black and white photography and I frame everything myself - all the frames are handmade and finished by my long suffering hands.

"I used to do the market stalls but this little shop has been a god-send, really.

"I like anything old and unusual - just like myself."

In addition to the shops based at the centre, there are records and video fairs every two months, craft fairs once a month and monthly fleamarkets, which offer shoppers more unusual items.

Clubs and activities

There's a wide range of activities held at the Old Police Station (Liverpool ECHO/Jess Flaherty)

In keeping with the spirit of community that the area is well known for, Lark Lane's community centre offers a wide range of regular activity groups and support sessions.

There are weekly parent and toddler groups, as well as pre-school nursery from Monday to Friday, offering parents two time slots for their children between 9am until 12pm and from 1pm until 4pm.

There's also a youth drama group held every Monday and Thursday from 6.30pm, providing a creative outlet for children to gain drama skills and let off some steam.

Classes include majorettes twice a week, pilates once a week, fully equipped pottery classes three days a week, as well as art classes and stained glass workshops which require advance booking.

Those wishing to try something new can take part in meditation classes, fitness classes, yoga, Middle Eastern dance and West African drumming, which are all held weekly and allow participants the opportunity to learn and develop new talents.

When it comes to support groups, the community centre has a lot to offer those in need.

There are welfare rights and debt advice appointments available by booking, as well as narcotics anonymous held every Wednesday evening, cocaine anonymous held every Thursday morning and healing days held once a month.
