We've never seen anything like Serena Williams' kitchen island – but experts say this shape is the future

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is a figure of firsts – both on the tennis court and in her home.

Famed among the greatest tennis players of all time – she was ranked world No. 1 in singles by the Women's Tennis Association (for 319 weeks) and consistently finished as the year-end No. 1. However, a look inside her Miami home suggests that she's a trailblazer in the interior industry, too.

The Michigan-born star offered a glimpse inside her kitchen, naturally designed by V Starr – her sister Venus's luxury design firm. The space (seen below) offers much to be admired, including Officine Gullo appliances and Caesarstone countertops; however, her geometric kitchen island and dining table ultimately take center stage.

The dramatic island-turned-dining table plays with contrasting materials – merging dark wood with bright white marble while playing with sharp rectangular shapes. It's unlike anything we've ever seen before – but designers predict pieces like this will top future kitchen trends and island trends – with some already seeing a demand for these shapes among clients.

'We are seeing more uniquely shaped furniture as people are wanting to lean away from normal and typical,' says Amy Youngblood, the owner and lead designer of Amy Youngblood Interiors. 'Dining tables are a fun way to switch things up and add some more character to your home –and geometric-shaped bases can turn your table into a sculptural yet functional art piece.'

'If you are thinking about investing in a unique table or island, think about how it will affect the space in the long term. The geometric base should be the focal point of the room. It’s certainly more exciting than a plain piece,' Amy says. And she's not alone in her observations.

This kitchen island land or table style is not for the faint of heart – but it's a risk that will instantly add a distinctive visual appeal to any kitchen area – something that is increasingly sought-after in modern kitchen design.

'Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to personalize their living spaces,' says Moe Solof, a kitchen specialist at Fabuwood. 'Unconventional islands and dining tables offer an opportunity to showcase individual style and preferences, setting their homes apart.'

The expert says he has noticed a significant trend toward more unique and personalized kitchen designs – something Serena's island celebrates perfectly. So, is it worth the investment?

'Investing in geometric islands, unusual islands, and dining tables can be a wise decision for homeowners seeking to enhance their living spaces' visual appeal, functionality, and overall value,' he says. 'As a kitchen specialist, I highly recommend considering these unique designs for future projects.' We're taking that as our cue.

Plus, for more kitchen inspiration, we're taking inspiration from this book below; it's one of our favorites for a reason.
