‘We've been through difficult times before’ community cinema closes its doors amid coronavirus

One of Liverpool’s oldest community cinemas will close its doors following the government’s latest advice.

Plaza Community Cinema in Waterloo will close temporarily from tomorrow, March 19, therefore cancelling upcoming events.

In a statement released on Facebook, cinema manager Martin Fol said: “The continuous uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 and the announcement by Boris Johnson PM yesterday [March 16] about the need not to travel only if essential and asking for gatherings of people to be restricted the Plaza Community Cinema will be closing until further notice from Thursday 19th March.”

The statement also confirmed that anyone with pre-booked tickets would be refunded, while anyone with cinema vouchers can use them at a later date.

Martin added: “The Plaza has been through difficult times before, in 2010 when we found ourselves almost going bankrupt and remained open.

“This time we have to hold our nerve and hope that we can come through this difficult time, but to all our loyal patrons who have supported us throughout the last 21 years, we ask that you look after yourselves and your loved ones and together we can be stronger.

“Stay safe everyone.”

Fans of the popular community cinema were quick to share messages of support.

One person said:”There’s so many people that will come together to keep the plaza going, you've done it once it can be done again. The plaza is a big part of the community and a safe place for our kids so we can’t see you go. Stay safe”

Another added: “Stay safe. We will come back and support you. The community, the people all will be there. Take care everyone.”

“Very sad but you have no choice. Don't worry, we won't forget you. We'll all rally round when you reopen. Take care all.” added another.
