We've all been making our beds wrong – gross reason you shouldn't do it in the morning

There's a constant debate about how often we should be changing our bedding, and people just can't seem to agree. From people saying once a week, to some not washing them for months, it causes disagreements.

But there are ways to keep your bedding fresh in-between washes, and that strangely includes not making your bed first thing in the morning. If you're currently in that habit, there's a gross reason you may want to stop.

As part of National Bed Month this March, experts at MattressNextDay shared their top tips to keep your bed looking and smelling as fresh as possible

Making your bed as soon as you wake up could actually be more harmful than good for you. The reason for this is that dust mites may be lurking within your bedding, and they shared that 80% of household dust mites are made up of our own dead skin.

They "love the warmth of your bed", so if you leave it 30 minutes before making the bed in the morning, this will keep it fresher and more hygienic as they've had time to air and cool, so will lessen the risk of dust mites loitering in your bed.

The experts also recommend washing your sheets on a 60 degree cycle in order for germs to be killed.

They added: "However, you will need to combine this wash with a good detergent in order to protect your bedding and keep it extra soft."

If you're long overdue a deep clean of your mattress (it needs to be done at least twice a year) you can sprinkle some baking soda over it, and leave it to sit for two to three hours.

The experts continued: "After this time has passed, use a vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda. The baking soda will help to thoroughly deep clean the mattress by removing sweat and odours that sink into the mattress over time."

Will you be trying any of these methods? Let us know in the comments.
