We tried the plush Edinburgh restaurant's Peter Pan themed menu and had some thoughts

This week we visited Six by Nico on Hanover Street to be whisked away to Neverland with their new Peter Pan themed menu.

We have visited plush eatery before and had some incredible experiences, enjoying both the Miami to Ibiza-themed menu filled with Mediterranean twists and the Down the Rabbit Hole experience based on another classic childhood tale.

This time around the tasting menu just wasn't as exciting as it usually is. The food was mostly nice and some dishes stood out but most just didn't hit the spot and we were left a little deflated.

As usual, we could not fault the staff, when going to the restaurant all the waiting staff give in-depth explanations about every dish and glass of wine served which makes the meal more of an experience than your standard dinner out.

But out of six courses it took until the fourth course for me to be mildly impressed as the first couple just weren't anything special.

Course one was the "Use your imagination - Pepperoni Pizza" a nice link to the scene in Hook where the Lost Boys have an imaginary dinner. But unfortunately, the dish didn't taste anything like Pepperoni Pizza it was more like eating lasagna with no pasta just cream and tomato sauce.

It was nice but it was just tomato sauce and cream and didn't give much else.

Course two was a ham hock and cheese toastie made with Celeriac Remoulade, Black Garlic Emulsion and Golden Raisin. Again it sounds delicious on the menu but the actual dish was quite underwhelming. You could barely taste the ham hock and it just wasn't very flavoursome.

When we were served course three things started to improve. We were served a Shellfish Risotto with Smoked Cod Bottarga.

This was delicious and I don't have any faults really there wasn’t any actual fish in the risotto but you could taste the strong flavour of cod. You can't go wrong with Risotto and the combination of smoked fish complemented the dish well.

The fourth course was definitely the best and the only one I was really impressed with. Here we were served Black Pollock with Bang Bang Sauce, Charred Cucumber, Satay Emulsion, and Pak Choi.

This plate was gorgeous and every aspect of the course worked very well and was a vibrant taste sensation.

Course five was the final savoury course. We were served a Confit Chicken Ballotine, Piperade, Red Pepper Romesco, Saffron Emulsion and Tarragon Salsa Verde.

This could be down to personal preference but we did not enjoy this course. It was made with chicken thighs, which I understand have a different colour and texture to other cuts of chicken but when I sliced into the ballotine the texture just wasn't my cup of tea.

This unfortunately put me off. I did try it with the several sauces dotted around the plate but none of them made much of a difference and it just wasn't great.

Finally, we came to dessert and this was beautiful. We both loved the Baked Salted Caramel Delice, Caramel Mousseline with Buttermilk Ice Cream.

The flavours were balanced perfectly, the Salted Caramel Delice was incredible and paired with the Buttermilk Ice Cream, made every mouthful a delight.

We had wine paired with each course and every single one was fantastic, accompanied by an in-depth explanation from the brilliant staff.

Overall we have had wonderful experiences at Six by Nico in the past and look forward to returning when there is a different menu but this was definitely a varied experience that didn't stand out or have the wow factor you would expect.

You can find out more and try Six By Nico for yourself here.
