Greggs ' heavily rumoured steak bake is finally here, but is it worth all the hype?
Upon hearing the game-changing news, we legged it to our nearest Greggs store to pick up one of the elusive delicacies for an all-important taste test.
Despite the bakery chain proudly proclaiming the exterior is made from 96 layers of light and crispy dairy-free puff pastry, just like the brand's vegan sausage roll, their vegan steak bake is clearly cut from a different cloth than its meaty counterpart, with slightly harder, lighter looking pastry, likely due to the absence of butter.
But inside, it's a whole different story, with the vegan version still filled to the brim with that famous gravy sauce.
I will admit I was a little apprehensive of the Quorn idea at first, but thankfully, it has no overpowering flavour, with the diced onions and salty gravy taking centre stage, and the mycoprotein simply providing some hearty texture and indulgence to a genuinely delicious winter warmer.
While slightly more tasteless and a little less rich than the iconic original, it's still a hugely impressive substitute that I would happily opt for again, with the the geniuses at Greggs somehow managing to change the face of vegan food for a second year in a row.
Costing £1.55 each, according to Greggs, the vegan steak bake has been in development for months, with the company recruiting a panel of vegan and non-vegan taste testers to work on getting the flavour just right.
Causing major queues outside the store when it first arrived this morning, the much anticipated pastries will initially be rolled out across 1,300 Greggs branches from today, before expanding to a further 700 on the 16th January.
But it's easier than it seems to get your hands on one, with Greggs having launched a vegan steak bake finder to help excited customers track down their nearest animal-friendly pastry.
