We tried the Indian takeaway reviewers can't seem to agree on

Taj on Lark Lane offers authentic Indian food so we were keen to give it a try - but it was a tad hit and miss.

The hospitality industry has once again reopened after more than a year of restrictions introduced in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, so supporting local businesses by tucking into an obnoxiously large takeaway seems beneficial to all.

By Wednesday every week, I'm usually daydreaming about the weekend and what takeaway to pick up.

You can't go wrong with Indian food in my opinion - a thick and delicious curry with naan breads and chips just never fails to hit the spot.

With that in mind, we decided to give Taj on Lark Lane a go.

Bohemian spot Lark Lane is famed for its eclectic range of restaurants, cafes, bars and more, with Taj occupying a large, stylish restaurant, as well as a takeaway menu for those wanting to enjoy an authentic Indian dish from the comfort of their own homes.

Reviews of Taj on JustEat's website are mixed, with some customers praising the food as "delicious" and "very tasty", while others complained of "watery sauce" and another said their order tasted "microwaved".

The restaurant boasts an extensive menu, with a range of sauces and options - though as somewhat of a spice wimp, I was disappointed in the number of mild choices available.

Nervous to try something my delicate palate wouldn't be able to handle, I played it safe and opted for a korma with halloumi (£8.95).

Sadly, it was incredibly disappointing. The sauce was quite thin, almost like a soup, and the curry only seemed to contain a few chunks of halloumi. It was also quite bland and left me feeling like I'd ordered a coconut soup which just happened to have a few chunks of cheese in it.

We also tried a bhuna with halloumi (£8.95). This was delicious - the curry was thick and flavoursome and, in addition to the ordered halloumi, there was the added texture of onions and peppers, which had been cooked to perfection - soft without being soggy and offering an additional punch of flavour.

For sides, we opted for garlic and cheese naans (£3.25 each) and two portions of chips (£2.50 each). The naan breads we got were incorrect, coming plain without the cheese we'd craved. Obviously, mistakes can happen anywhere and it's easy done but it's still very disappointing when you have a particular desire for something, pay for it, and then you don't get it.

Given our order was relatively hit and miss, I'm not sure if we'd order from Taj again - at least, not for a while.

Perhaps it's better to visit in person and thankfully, that's a possibility once again.
