We tried the Bonnie Badger's hearty Sunday roast and were seriously impressed

Sometimes the grim winter weather makes an indulgent lunch of roast beef and vegetables essential.

As Sunday roasts go, the Bonnie Badger may offer up the best plate you'll find anywhere in Edinburgh or the Lothians.

We tried out the lunchtime meal at the restaurant in Gullane, East Lothian recently.

It's as hearty a meal as we've ever had and perfect for a classy trip to the countryside.

The restaurant

The Bonnie Badger is part of Tom Kitchin's chain, which also includes Southside Scran and The Kitchin in Leith.

They're in good company as The Scran and Scallie, another Tom Kitchin venture, was named as having one of the best Sunday roasts in the UK.

The Badger also has a bar area and hotel rooms, and can be rented out for parties or functions. At the back there's an outdoor terrace perfect for events in warmer months.

December is a particularly good time of year to visit as the Bonnie Badger currently has its Christmas decorations up, with a lovely festive replica of the building, a real tree and a roaring fire to set the mood.

The roast

It's a high-end restaurant with the finest quality food, but the portions are certainly generous.

First up was the roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables, which come with gravy.

There's so much roast beef it should be measured in acres rather than weight - it's the equivalent of a small country estate.

Each cut is expertly cooked with just enough red in the middle. The Yorkshire pudding is so big it resembles an inverted hat.

If this doesn't fill you up, nothing will.

Veggie options

We were particularly impressed with the fried vegetable crisps as an appetiser.

If you're not a meat-eater, you might want to try the vegetable pithivier, which comes with from Kilduff farm pumpkin and sage.

This doesn't disappoint and is perfectly filling despite having smaller proportions than the beef roast.

Pudding

The dessert menu is certainly worth checking out if you have any room left.

We went for the pear and ginger sponge pudding with vanilla ice cream. The soft sponge and sweet pear are the perfect way to round off a Sunday meal.
