We tried posh supermarket crisps from Marks & Spencer, Asda, Aldi, Co-op and one was like smelly socks

There's nothing better than a big bag of sharing crisps to dive into on a Saturday night, and it's often very easy to end up eating the whole thing.

With plenty of different 'posh' crisps out there, from Kettle Chips to Tyrell's, many supermarkets are offering their own brand versions which are just as good.

A fancy bag of crisps often comes at a price, with some 150g bags sometimes costing nearly more than £2, so it's important to find an affordable option that's just as tasty.

We purchased a range of posh supermarket sharing bags of crisps from M&S, Asda, Aldi and Co-op to see which one tasted the best, and had the best value.

M&S Prosciutto & Formaggio Crisps

The M&S Collection hand cooked Prosciutto & Formaggio sharing bag of crisps aesthetically looked very fancy, and I was intrigued.

I'm a huge fan of the Black Truffle & Olive Oil flavour, so had high hopes for this one, because M&S know how to impress with its foods.

To look at, the bag definitely had a 'premium' look to it, and for £1.85 for one big bag, I was expecting big things.

After one bite of a crisp, the formaggio was really overpowering - and not in a good way, it was kind of like smelly socks.

Then, the smoky meaty prosciutto flavour came through, and left a bit of a funny aftertaste I'll admit.

All in all, I'd say these crisps weren't particularly impressive, and although ham and cheese is usually a great combination, this time it wasn't.

The consistency of the crisp was nice and crunchy, and you could definitely tell they were hand cooked, but they just lacked something.

Perhaps the flavour just wasn't for me, and I should stick to my favourite truffle bag of sharing crisps, but I'll be giving these crisps a middle of the range 3/5.

They were nice - but definitely nothing special.

Asda Extra Special Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps

I'm mildly obsessed with crisps. I try to be relatively healthy and then go wild on the weekends and indulge in whatever treats I may desire. Whenever I buy crisps, I can't help but tuck in and eat the whole bag.

Kettle Chips are my personal favourite and I was keen to see how Asda's fancy crisps measured up.

Asda Extra Special Sea Salt and Cider Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps are completely delicious. They're well flavoured, with the perfect ratio of salt and vinegar.

The crisps are chunky and in varying shapes, adding to an authentically hand-cooked feel. Like all salt and vinegar crisps, they can make your tongue a little sore if you get too carried away (like me) and eat a generous helping in one sitting.

I will absolutely buy these again.

Co-op Aberdeen Angus Steak and Peppercorn Sauce Crinkle Cut Crisps

The first thing you’ll notice about these crisps when you open the bag is the beefy smell. It’s the kind of smell that lingers everywhere after eating them - on your fingers, up your nose and in the air.

I love a crinkle cut and to me these were like a classier version of steak flavour McCoys, not as thick but still with a nice crispy crunch and a strong flavour.

The crinkle cut was a great addition to the crisps (Amy Browne/ Liverpool ECHO)

They leave a slightly greasy slick on your lips, but have a peppery punch and a really moreish taste.

At £1.70 a bag, they’re not the cheapest on the market but for a special treat I’ll certainly be buying again.

Aldi’s Specially Selected Sea Salt & Chardonnay Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps

My favourite flavour of crisps is salt and vinegar, so whenever I fancy treating myself to a bag of “posh” crisps, Aldi’s Specially Selected Sea Salt & Chardonnay Vinegar Hand Cooked Crisps are my go-to.

I’ve tried many brands of salt and vinegar crisps over the years, but Aldi’s Specially Selected ones are my favourite, as they're absolutely delicious and offer more than your average salt and vinegar flavour crisps.

The sea salt and chardonnay vinegar is a great twist on the classic flavour, offering a more exclusive taste experience that’s different to your average packet of salt and vinegar. You wouldn't think they were only 79p!

Aldi’s Specially Selected crisps are full of flavour with an equal amount of salt and vinegar. Some other brands can taste too salty or too acidic, causing you to pull a peculiar face as your taste buds tingle, but this isn’t the case with Aldi’s Specially Selected.

Some people may find the crisps are a bit too thin compared to other “posh” crisps, but I personally prefer crisps that are thinner, as the focus is all on the added flavourings rather than the potato.
