We tried peri-peri mayonnaise from M&S, Lidl and Nando’s and there’s one clear winner

We all love Nando's, the Portuguese themed restaurant has a series of chicken (and vegetarian friendly) dishes that customers just love, but some people say it’s overrated because of the price of the food.

But we’ve come up with a solution. A lot of the burgers, wraps and pittas have peri-peri mayonnaise, which is the secret ingredient that makes it delicious if you ask us. So why not buy it yourself and make your own homemade favourite.

We bought peri-peri mayonnaise from M&S, Lidl and Nando’s to find out which is the best, and for us, there was one clear winner.

I decided I'd make three mini-wraps for my lunch, each wrap with a different sauce. All three wraps contained grilled halloumi cheese and lettuce, topped off with a different type of my beloved peri-peri sauce.

My favourite and easy lunch to make was judged by the cost, taste, texture and spice of the sauce.

M&S

M&S peri-peri mayonnaise (Amy Donohoe)

This Marks and Spencer's sauce would be more suitable for a barbeque. It’s a bit runnier than the Nando’s sauce and there’s a strong taste of mustard and chillies from it. Overall, it’s tasty and spicy, but not the same as the famous chicken restaurant's sauce.

Retails at €2.20.

Lidl

This sauce is quite similar to Nando’s, but it’s a bit spicier and a lot thicker. The most spicy of the three for sure. There’s also more of a hint of paprika and pepper compared to the other two sauces.

Retails at €0.85, the cheapest of the lot.

Nando’s

Nando's peri-peri mayonnaise (Amy Donohoe)

This is our winner. Not too thick or not too runny. If you’re looking to recreate your favourite Nando’s dish it has to be with the own branded Perinaise sauce. It's not too spicy and not too plain. Blended with mayonnaise, the sauce can be used as a dip for chips or crisps, or to give a bit of creaminess to a sandwich or salad.

Retailing at €2.99, it's the most expensive of the lot but those extra few cents are well worth it.
