We tried Edinburgh's 'hidden gem' restaurant that has been delighting locals for years

This week we tried Edinburgh's 'hidden gem' Indian restaurant that is tucked away in Newington and has been delighting locals for years.

Despite living in the area for nearly 25 years and growing up just down the road I had never actually visited Voujon, an award-winning restaurant on Newington Road, before but after seeing some brilliant reviews on Tripadvisor we had to give it a go.

Located just down the road from the Royal Commonwealth Pool and at the start of Newington, the unassuming diner is a perfect place for a quiet dinner. We were totally blown away by the food and service which was filled with little touches that just made the experience that little bit more special.

Heading down for a midweek treat we were greeted by a polite waiter who showed us to our table. As soon as we sat down at the beautifully set table with a crisp white tablecloth and sparkling glasses we felt removed from the chaos of everyday life and almost like we were in a fancy restaurant on holiday.

The menu is huge which took us a while to ponder over due to the great selection of seafood, starters, traditional Indian dishes and more.

While we were deciding we opted for two chilled bottles of Cobra - a beautiful light lager that is the perfect pair for the Indian feast we were about to indulge in.

I ordered the Punjabi Lamb Chops served with salad and a large buttery garlic naan bread that went down a treat. The dish is described as: "Full flavoured, full bodied, no fuss embodies the region in which this recipe hails from."

When I'm not ordering a curry, chargrilled lamb chops are one of my favourite things to have and I have tried them at restaurants across the city. Voujon's dish offered a large portion and the meat was perfectly cooked with a mouth-watering spice.

My mum went for the Kazi Eesa which is whole king prawns in the shell cooked in a delicious spicy sauce, with cubed green peppers, onions, chilies, fresh ginger & coriander.

The prawns were massive and butterflied so really easy to eat, they didn't appear to be in their shells so there was no flavour lost from peeling them. We ended up sharing our main dishes and the prawns were outstanding, cooked to perfection, and absolutely delicious.

For dinner for two with drinks it cost around £50 not including the tip. There was so much to choose from and after the two dishes we tried, I can't wait to go back and try more.

Following the mains, we were given a hot towel to wash our hands which was a really nice touch and not one you get in restaurants much anymore.

I honestly could not fault the experience, we were treated like royalty and received great service from a charming and helpful team of waiting staff.

The interior of the restaurant is clean, beautifully presented, and has a really suave feel. We loved our visit and will definitely be back. You can find out more and book here.
