We tried deodorants from Sainsbury's, Boots, Superdrug and two scored top marks

Deodorant is one of those essential beauty products you can’t really do without, but it’s not exactly a treat to buy.

You can pick up a spray or stick pretty cheap from a supermarket or chemist, or you can spend quite a bit more on a designer deodorant. But do the budget buys work as well as the pricier options?

This week, we’ve been testing out a range of deodorants that come with different price tags, to see which performed the best. Take a look at our verdict below:

Wild

Wild is a natural deodorant, which you can subscribe to get delivered to your door, or pick up in shops including Sainsbury’s and Boots. I’m always keen to cut down on single use plastic and to use natural products when possible, so although this is a bit more expensive than previous stick deodorants I’ve used, I don’t mind spending the extra money.

You initially need to buy a starter pack, which contains a solid case (coming in different colours) and a refill, which comes in plastic-free packaging that can be composted. There are different scents to choose from and I went for the Jasmine and Mandarin Blossom.

It’s easy enough to assemble and also to change the refill when it runs out. But does it actually work? Wild isn’t an antiperspirant as it doesn’t contain aluminium salts - it’s a deodorant, as sweating is a natural and important function. So during hot weather, or when exercising, I did still feel myself sweating, but this product is designed to tackle the odour when you naturally sweat.

Having used it consistently, during high levels of activity and on a day to day basis, I didn’t notice any unpleasant odours and stayed feeling fresh. The Jasmine and Mandarin Blossom scent I chose had a slightly floral, but not overpowering smell and the deodorant had a soft, creamy consistency.

You only need to use a couple of swipes under each arm and I found one refill lasted about six weeks. I also didn’t ever notice any staining or white marks on clothes, which was a real bugbear I had about my previous stick deodorant. If you’re happy to pay a little extra for this great product, I’d really recommend it.

Sure Women Cotton Dry

Sure Cotton Dry anti-perspirant deodorant is formulated to provide 48 hour protection against sweat and odour with an alcohol-free formula, with the aim of making you “feel fresh, dry and protected” all day long.

Sure isn’t my usual go-to for deodorant but with my favourite product out of stock at the time, it was the next best option. The product has a light, clean fragrance that is reminiscent of fresh cotton sheets and did make me feel as fresh as a daisy.

According to the product description, the deodorant’s scent stays “no matter how hard you push yourself”, which I found to be only somewhat true. The fragrance did last some of the day, but I did feel the need to reapply after a few hours.

In comparison to my typical go-to deodorant I found that I could feel myself sweating a bit more than usual, which was disappointing. While I was pleased with the fragrance of this deodorant, I was underwhelmed on the whole. It worked in the short term but I’ll be glad to go back to my usual brand soon.

Dove Advanced Care Anti-perspirant Roll-On Calming Blossom

One of my worst fears is smelling badly, so I'm obsessed with deodorants that keep me smelling fresh all day long. For this reason, I usually stick with Dove products.

The popular brand offers an array of floral, fruity and soapy fragranced products, with shampoo, shower gel, moisturiser, exfoliator and more all up for grabs. Its line-up of antiperspirants is impressive, with roll-ons, sprays and bars on offer.

I tend to use a roll on in the morning, and I usually carry a spray with me in case I need a little boost later in the day. Currently, my favourite roll on is the Dove Advanced Care Anti-perspirant Roll-On Calming Blossom, which costs £3.79. It's also available in Dove's trademark original scent.

I love this deodorant because it keeps me sweat-free, while smelling completely divine. My skin doesn't seem to like hair removal of any kind so shaving and waxing is always a battle between wanting to be fuzz-free versus not wanting to deal with an angry red shaving rash or ingrown hairs.

This deodorant helps keep my underarms smooth and clear, which is a definite win, plus it smells absolutely incredible. I'd definitely recommend giving this a try, especially if your underarms are partial to razor rashes or other hair removal induced lumps and bumps.

Mitchum Advanced Flower Fresh

Mitchum Advanced Flower Fresh (Liverpool Echo)

Mitchum Advanced Flower Fresh deodorant claims to offer 48 hour protection and leave you "feeling dry and comfortable." The roll on deodorant comes in a 100ml bottle.

When it comes to deodorant, I tend to stick to what I know I like and have purchased this Mitchum product for a couple of years now. What I like about the product is how long lasting it is. After applying it in the morning I find it always lasts all day. It also doesn't leave any white marks on clothing, which has been an issue I've had with other deodorants I've tried.

The smell of the deodorant is really nice too. A fresh, floral scent that is not too overpowering. I'll definitely keep purchasing this product as it offers everything I want from a deodorant and I can't see myself buying anything else.
