'We trained and next thing, everything - his boots - were gone' - when Sol Campbell quit Notts County

Former Notts County defender Brendan Moloney has spoken of being a teammate of Sol Campbell's - until he suddenly disappeared from Meadow Lane.

Moloney joined the Magpies on loan from neighbours Nottingham Forest shortly before Munto Finance took over the Meadow Lane club in 2009.

The right-back joined shortly before former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson was named director of football.

Kasper Schmeichel was another big money (in theory) arrival, but it was the signing for former England and Arsenal defender Campbell on a free transfer which grabbed the headlines.

However, Campbell played just one game, at Morecambe, before leaving, with Moloney saying he scarpered.

"I remember Sol Campbell coming in for a couple of weeks, training and playing a game," Moloney told Balls.ie.

"I’d say, deep down, did he really want to be there? He was playing League Two football. They must have sold him some dream.

"He quickly realised after two weeks that it wasn’t for him. We trained one day and came back to the stadium and next thing, everything - his boots - were gone. We never saw him again."

It was probably a wise move as it turned out Munto Finance had no finance. Instead they plunged the club to the brink of bankruptcy with Eriksson famously saying he knew something was wrong when the milk bill was not paid.

"They were taken over by these so-called multi-millionaires when really they had nothing - it was all a bit of a scam," said Moloney.

Despite the problems, Moloney was keen to stay at Notts, but the club was placed under a transfer embargo, meaning his next move was another loan spell, this time at Scunthorpe.

The former Ireland Under-21 international is now living in his homeland again having retired at the age of 29.
