We taste tested Aldi, Asda, Tesco, and Sainsbury's caterpillar cakes to rank them

A chocolate caterpillar cake has been an iconic birthday treat for years, with most choosing the classic Colin to stick the candles on.

However, in recent weeks all of the supermarket's cakes have been thrown under the spotlight as a sugary battle broke out between M&S and Aldi.

Claiming Aldi's cake was too similar to theirs, the luxury food giant tried to take their discount counterpart to court over the issue, which in turn created a rather hilarious Twitter war.

Aldi had stopped selling the cake in February, but have now stated they will be bringing it back to the shelves, telling M&S that they will be putting the proceeds to charity.

However, M&S quickly fought back, tweeting that Aldi should be putting their own unique cake up for sale, perhaps a "Kevin the carrot cake", as they put it.

During the feud, many customers have been commenting on the similarity between all of the different shops versions of Colin, but just how similar are they?

There was only one way to find out, so we headed out to a number of supermarkets across Edinburgh to pick up as many caterpillar cakes as we could find.

Armed with four, including the original Colin, we put each to the test to see which is the tastiest, which is the best value for money and which is the most unique, so you don't have to.

M&S - Colin the Caterpillar

Priced at £7, the cake is pretty reasonable when you consider the price of some other items from Marks and Sparks.

The box says it serves 10 people, however this could be slightly more or less depending on how big you cut the slices.

The chocolate on the outside cuts through nicely, and gives way to a pretty succulent sponge.

When it comes to caterpillar cakes, there really isn't much we can say is wrong about Colin, he's the martyr of the industry and will always make a birthday happy.

Our rating is 10/10.

Sainsbury's - Wiggles the caterpillar

We were pretty shocked to see the price of this cake was £12, almost double the cost of the M&S cake, and although it says it serves 14, it's actually smaller than the original too.

Looks-wise, Wiggles is the most similar to Colin, as they both have the classic white chocolate face and feet, as well as some larger smartie sweets on the top.

However, when it comes to taste, the cake was pretty tasty, with another soft and creamy sponge as well as a very chocolatey ganache in-between the swirls.

So, marking it down a little for the price and size, we're giving Wiggles a 7/10.

Tesco - Curly the Caterpillar

Priced at £6, this is what we were expecting the cost to be for a Colin dupe.

Serving 12 people, Tesco have swapped out the white chocolate face for icing, and have gone for some. white chocolate lines and sweets on the top instead.

Curly is probably the least similar from Colin in terms of appearances, and has a slightly less chocolatey flavour, but is great for those who can find chocolate a little sickly.

However, overall there is not a huge difference in flavour between Curly and Colin.

Our rating for Tesco's cake would be 8/10.

ASDA - Clyde the Caterpillar cake

Finally we have Clyde, the cheapest of the selection at just £5.92, to be exact.

Serving 12, ASDA have differentiated their cake with both icing feet and face, instead of the classic white chocolate.

Another very similar flavour, one of the only differences we could taste was their hard chocolate sprinkles which might be one to avoid if you have fragile teeth.

However, overall it was another tasty cake and great value for money.

So our rating would be another 8/10.

The verdict

Although we were unable to get our hands on Aldi's cake to compare just how similar it really was to M&S, we can confirm that there is virtually no difference between the ones put out by all the other supermarkets.

Sainsbury's definitely was the most similar in terms of appearance, but when it comes to flavour, each sample we tried was just as good as the next.

So, if you're looking for value for money, we would recommend the Clyde or the Curly, however for just an extra pound you can get the original Colin from M&S.
