We taste tested a deep fried Cadbury's Creme Egg - and this is what we thought

For me, Easter is arguably bigger than Christmas. After all, when else is it acceptable to my body weight in chocolate and get away with it?

And I love nothing more than a sugary, sweet Cadbury's Creme Egg.

So when I walked past Parc Lane Fish & Chips on Queen Street in Cardiff I was intrigued to see a massive poster advertising deep fried Creme Eggs.

I had to eat one. For journalistic purposes, of course.

The freakshake topped with a chocolate doughnut, Easter egg and whipped cream that will test the sweetest tooth

Manager Nye Watkins has been serving the £1 deep-fried delights alongside his usual trays of fish and chips for two years - and he says they've been proving very popular.

They're made in much the same way as most deep-fried food.

After sprinkling water over the Creme Egg, they're then dipped in flour and batter before being deep fried, like one big gooey mess.

But are they really as delicious as his customers think? I ordered a selection for the office and we put them to the test...

The verdict

So what was it like?

First impressions among my colleagues was that the deep fried chocolate eggs looked "disgusting" as the 'yolk' oozed from them.

A crispy, crunchy coating with smooth milk chocolate and a soft fondant centre was always going to be a confusion of textures, but strangely I quite liked that.

It's not laden with oil and yet the melting chocolate spilling out added some sweetness to the crispy and more savoury batter.

Yes, the batter did taste a bit fishy - and yes, it's very rich and very sweet.

But could it be my new Easter guilty pleasure? Maybe. Just maybe.
