They survived being struck by a car as they walked on a city centre pavement.
But today the nightmare continues for Angela and Ronald Chapman, a week on from the horror incident. The couple, from Gateshead, had been enjoying a night out in Newcastle when they were hit from behind by a car that mounted the pavement, on Grainger Street.
Angela became trapped under the vehicle, while Ronald was thrown against a wall. At first it seemed both had somehow escaped the incident, on Sunday September 11, without serious injury.
But after Ronald, 54, became ill in hospital while his wife was being checked over as a precaution, medics discovered he had lacerations on his liver that could have been caused by the impact of the car.
And today Angela told ChronicleLive how they are both still struggling to cope with what happened to them. The 49-year-old said: "We still haven't got over the trauma. I'm scared of the traffic now.
Angela and Ronald were on Grainger Street making their way towards the Bigg Market, at around 7pm, when they were hit from behind by the car. Angela ended up under the vehicle.
A number of passers-by came to help, including an off-duty nurse, some homeless people and runners who had just completed the Great North Run.
Angela, who works in a barbers was eventually freed when the driver reversed the car. The couple were both taken to hospital as a precaution. But Ronald, a car salesman, suddenly became poorly and began throwing up.
He has since been discharged from hospital, but is still recovering.
Angela said: "They have confirmed he has got lacerations on his liver, but we don't know yet what has caused them. And his legs are such a mess."
The collision is being investigated by Northumbria Police. A spokesman said: “Shortly after 7pm we received a report of a collision on Grainger Street in Newcastle.
“For reasons to be established, the vehicle mounted the pavement and collided with a shop front. Two pedestrians in the area received treatment as a precaution.
“The driver remained at the scene and is assisting officers. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
