We simulated Manchester United vs Roma to get a score prediction for Europa League clash

Manchester United take on Serie A side AS Roma in the Europa League semi-final first leg on Thursday evening, and could come up against two former United players.

It's likely that the Roma line-up will include both defender Chris Smalling and attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who both had spells at the club, with former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko also likely to start in attack for the Italian side.

United will be without Anthony Martial and Phil Jones, but Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay should all return having been banned in their previous Europa League game against Granada, with Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani also likely to start at Old Trafford.

So, what team could Solskjaer go with against Roma? And, what could the final score be?

We used FIFA 21 to get a unique score prediction, this is what happened...

We simulated United vs Roma to get a score prediction

To set up this simulation, we used kick-off mode within FIFA 21 but didn't select a team to control; we then selected the teams and watched the match play out by itself, to give us a prediction.

The AI difficulty was set to legendary, with the line-up updated with the latest transfers, injuries and suspensions.

AS Roma are not officially licensed on FIFA 21, so they are called Roma FC on the game.

We predict that Man United could set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with their line-up as follows: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Bailly, Shaw; Fred, McTominay, Fernandes; Rashford, Cavani, Pogba.

We predict that Roma could set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Lopez; Ibanez, Smalling, Cristante; Karsdorp, Veretout, Diawara, Peres; Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Dzeko.

This simulated game had a nervy feel for both sides, with neither United or Roma being particularly effective in attack, although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side did have more possession overall.

The first real chance of the game fell to Bruno Fernandes just before half-time, with Paul Pogba sliding a pass into the midfielder inside the area.

But the Portuguese maestro's effort was partly blocked by Pau Lopez, with the Spaniard rushing out quickly, and the goalkeeper managed to divert the shot onto the post.

In the second half, United finally managed to find a breakthrough, with Marcus Rashford netting.

The England forward had drifted out to the left and after being found by Fernandes in the area, Rashford took a touch inside and smashed a finish into the far corner to make it 1-0.

Although the home side continued to dominate possession in the closing stages, United couldn't create another chance, with Roma not providing any real threat.
