'We should be up there': Returning Albion Rovers striker says League Two title hunt will be wide open next term

Returning Albion Rovers striker Declan Byrne believes that everyone in League Two has a shot at promotion glory next term.

The forward was among the latest batch of players to commit their future to the Cliftonhill cause joining Jason Krones, Bryan Wharton and Giuliano Morena.

The 23-year-old has set this targets high for next season, noting that champions Peterhead and
play-off winners Clyde exiting the division means there is no odds-on favourite for title glory.

And with Stenhousemuir and Brechin joining the bottom tier after relegation in League One, he has ambitions of a top-four finish next term.

Delighted Byrne said: “There is a good wee buzz about the place just now after how we finished the last season.

“If you look at the season quarterly then we would have been up there challenging for the
top four.

“Our form was brilliant, and when I heard Kevin and Joe were coming back I definitely wanted to come back.

“The showed faith in me and stuck by me. They trusted me and I wanted to repay that.

“I had a couple of other offers, but when Kevin said he wanted me and that he was coming back for
next season it made up my mind.”

He continued: “When I came in there were a lot of changes.

“Kevin and Joe pretty much wiped out the squad that was here in January and what he has done in that short period is amazing.

“It was a big rebuild, but with this core of players and a few others we can give it a good go.

“There are boys that have left, but I’m sure that Kevin and Joe will have a plan in place to replace them.

“There isn’t any reason we shouldn’t be up there.

“I think getting rid of Clyde and Peterhead is going to be big. The division looks really open next season.

“With Stenny and Brechin, they’ll be coming down and have boys there that were getting beat every week.

“We don’t really have that now, we’re really positive. It didn’t even feel like a relegation battle, it felt like we had won promotion.

“We’re looking to give it a good go and who knows what we could do next season.”
