'We remain open to all': Pub cancels Brexit party after finding out what it is for

The UK officially leaves the European Union today (January 31) - some people are rejoicing, some people are mourning our departure, and others just aren't bothered.

The vote back in June 2016 seems to have divided people politically and socially like no other event in modern history.

And now an official Brexit celebration which was due to take place today at a Bristol pub has been cancelled.

Staff at the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer in King Street said they were unaware of the political theme of the party when it was booked.

Since finding out they have decided to cancel the gathering.

Bristol Live understands the party was organised by the Leavers of Britain’s Bristol branch.

Brexit Day: everything you need to know

A spokesperson for the Royal Navy Volunteer said: "It has come to our attention that a booking made at The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer is in fact for a party for an ‘official’ Brexit event.

"This booking in our function room was made under a personal name, and they did not indicate that this would be the focus of this event. The first we knew of the nature of the event was upon hearing it publicised this evening, 30th January.

"As everyone knows, the country has been massively split over this very divisive issue.

"Here at the pub we encompass a broad range of views & encourage discussion, as all good pubs should.

"But we are well aware that January 31st is going to be a day of celebration for some, and a day of deep sorrow for others, and we as such, we have no interest in taking one side over another and therefore have cancelled the booking.

"We are, and remain, a pub open to all."

The University of Bristol Conservative Association has said the event has now been moved to another venue.

The post reads: "Due to unforeseen circumstances we have now changed the location of this event.

"We will be celebrating at The Berkeley, Weatherspoons on Park Street!"

There are also other Brexit celebrations planned across Bristol.
