'We're up s*** creek' - Extinction Rebellion protest underneath Bath's Pulteney Bridge

'We have just six months to act or face catastrophic changes.'

That is the message from a group of kayaking climate protesters who floated under Bath's World Heritage bridge today (July 16).

For almost the entire day, Extinction Rebellion activists stationed themselves under Pulteney Bridge, clutching to pink signs reading 'we're up s*** creek' and 'build back green'.

Organiser Ros Pears told Somerset Live: “We recognise some may be offended by the wording but we wanted a message that would make people sit up and take notice. Time is running out.

"One of the world’s foremost energy experts has told us we have just six months to act or face catastrophic changes for our planet and every life form on it."

Extinction Rebellion member Mat Thomas moved to reassure people no damage was caused to the historic landmark.

“We recognise it’s a World Heritage monument but there is no heritage on a dead planet,” said Mat.

“As the COVID-19 crisis continues we mustn’t forget the far larger and growing threat of climate breakdown.”

Extinction Rebellion Bath says the action is being taken "to highlight the admission in the government’s own Committee on Climate Change report, published 25th June, that they are woefully short of meeting their own emissions targets by a long margin".

Extinction Rebellion has warned it will stage more mass gatherings across the UK later this summer.
